ALEXANDRA AND CHARLOTTE ARE CRANING THEIR NECKS TO WATCH SOPHIE AND COSMO. GLEN WATCHES THEM IN

STOCK-STILL.

GLEN

COSMO GIVES A MUFFLED CRY OF PAIN. STARTLED, CHARLOTTE GIVES A QUICK GLANCE AT THE BACK OF THE SHED.

GLEN
What was that? Charlotte? What are you looking at?

THE GIRLS ARE STUMPED FOR WORDS.

GLEN

GLEN PUSHES THE GIRLS TOWARDS THE BACK OF THE SHED WHERE COSMO AND SOPHIE ARE LYING. SOPHIE AND COSMO
SCRAMBLE UP. GLEN IS AMUSED BY WHAT HE SEES.

GLEN
Ah Cosmo! Practicing your English assignment again!
I think we’ve seen enough of you today!

HE TURNS TO ALEXANDRA AND CHARLOTTE.

GLEN

MAGGIE AND ROSIE DISCUSS THE Y FRONTS FOUND IN GEORGIA’S ROOM.

ROSIE

CHRISTINE

GEORGIA
Clooney? He’s way past it.

CHRISTINE

CHRISTINE
They have the experience.

GEORGIA

GLEN

GEORGIA RISES TO LEAVE THE ROOM. CHRISTINE PULLS HER BACK DOWN.

CHRISTINE
Whatever it is that you have to say can
be said in front of Georgia. And anyway,
I am not allowed a man in my room.

GLEN
I am your teacher and it is
confidential. Georgia? Do you mind?

CHRISTINE

GLEN
Come on Chrissie, don’t be a dickhead.
You know it’s perfectly safe to have me

GEORGIA HESITATES, LOOKING FOR HELP AT CHRISTINE. CHRISTINE RELENTS AND NODS.

GEORGIA

GLEN

CHRISTINE

GLEN LIFTS HER CHIN AND GENTLY KISSES HER.

GLEN

GLEN’S NIBBLES HER EAR AND STROKES HER HAIR. CHRISTINE ABRUPTLY STEPS BACK.

CHRISTINE

CHRISTINE

GLEN IS ASTONISHED.

20. INT. HOUSE MAIN AREA DAY

AMY ENTERS AS GLEN LEAVES. PUZZLED, AMY WATCHES HIM LEAVE. RICHARD WALKS OUT OF HIS OFFICE.

AMY
What was he doing here?

RICHARD
To see Christine.

AMY
Christine! What about?

RICHARD
Her work. Why?

AMY
He is on leave to sober up! Why on earth
did he want to see Christine?

RICHARD
I need to have a word with you.

AMY
I had better see Christine. There is
something fishy going on.

AMY WALKS AWAY. RICHARD PULLS HER BACK.

RICHARD
I said I needed to have a word!

AMY
You’re hurting me!

RICHARD
That’s because you’re not listening.

AMY
Ok, ok Richard. What is it?

RICHARD
Pay attention will you? Open your ears
when I speak to you!

AMY
Of course, I am sorry.

RICHARD’S FINGER GOES OVER A PLINTH AND WITHDRAWS WITH DUST ON HIS FINGER.

RICHARD
What is the meaning of this?

AMY

RICHARD

RICHARD

them! They are your concern! Anyway
they would have left by now!

RICHARD LIFTS HER FACE BY SOFTLY PULLING HER HAIR.

RICHARD
Are you disobeying me?

21. INT. RECEPTION DAY

CLARE SORTS THE POST AS AMY ENTERS.

AMY
May I have the swimming pool key please Clare?

CLARE
Of course.

CLARE GETS THE KEY. SHE GIVES IT TO AMY.

AMY
Thank you.

AMY TURNS TO WALK OUT.

CLARE
Mrs Short?

AMY TURNS.

CLARE
Could I have a private word with you?

22. INT. COMMON ROOM DAY

AMY AND CLARE SIT OPPOSITE EACH OTHER DRINKING TEA AND EATING BISCUITS. OTHER TEACHERS ARE SITTING AT SEVERAL TABLES.

CLARE
I thought that he was going to propose!

CLARE LOOKS AROUND TO SEE IF ANYONE CAN OVERHEAR AND LEANS OVER THE TABLE TOWARDS AMY.

CLARE
But he was only after sex!

SHE SITS BACK AND SHAKES HER HEAD.

CLARE
Anyway, we patched up our differences
during the holidays and I thought that
would be the end of it.

CLARE SIGHS DEEPLY.

AMY
But?

CLARE
He brought it all up again.

AMY
And?

CLARE
It was awful. We had such an argument.

AMY
I see.

CLARE
We had never even kissed you see.

AMY
He never kissed you?

CLARE
We had our first kiss this morning.
Then I told him that I am still a
virgin. He stepped back, muttered an
excuse and walked out. I am afraid that
I have lost him.

AMY
Surely not. He was probably confused.

AMY SIPS TEA, HESITATES AND THEN LEANS FORWARDS.

AMY
Tell me Clare, if you don’t mind me
asking. How come you are still a virgin?

CLARE SIGHS.

CLARE
It is extremely embarrassing.

AMY
Absolutely not! I find it most endearing.

CLARE
I had such a strict upbringing. A kiss
was a sinful thing and sex was never
mentioned. I had a few boyfriends of
course but nothing came of them. I
realise now that I must have been
such a prude. Then my mother fell ill. I
worked during the day and cared for her
in the evening.

AMY
Oh dear.

CLARE
Yes. The last ten years of her life I
was her full time carer. After she died
I took a short holiday and then started
here.

AMY
By then life had past you by.

CLARE
Yes. Then I met Matt. He became a
good friend.

AMY
More than a friend, surely.

CLARE
I had hoped so.

AMY
Tell me, when he kissed you, did you
feel a glowing sensation in your belly?

CLARE

I am afraid that he will never approach

to confide in him that you are nervous
about having sex.

Do you really think so? Won’t that put

AMY
No. He will love you more. You know, he
loved his late wife very much and was
most protective of her. For you both to
have a second chance is such a beautiful
thing. Never mind that you are nervous
and he is confused. Talk to him and it
will work out. I promise you.

CLARE
I will need to pluck up courage first.
